How Do I Get Paid?

Collecting Workers' Comp Benefits

After the initial trauma of a workplace injury wears off, you may be wondering how you will pay your bills while you are unable to work. After you follow the proper steps in reporting your workplace injuries and filing a workers' compensation claim, you can expect to see your first workers' compensation check in about two weeks.

In North Carolina, workers' compensation payments are roughly 66 percent of the injured employees' average weekly wage, up to a maximum of $836 (in 2011). Payments are usually made weekly.

For a free consultation to discuss your injuries or loss with an experienced Concord personal injury lawyer who is also a certified workers' compensation specialist, please call 877-790-7039 toll free.

Injured workers receive no compensation for the first seven days they are unable to work. If an injured worker's claim is accepted by the employer's insurer, payments can begin on the seventh day after the injury is occurred. If the disability continues, payments can be extended until the employee is able to return to work.

If you are deemed to have a permanent impairment or disability, the North Carolina Industrial Commission (NCIC) may award compensation for that beyond lost wages. Medical payments are handled separately, and may continue indefinitely, even if you are able to return to work.
